We’ve all heard of colony collapse. So many crops are threatened if we lose our key pollinator, the honeybee. But as most scientists look furiously at North America’s honeybee to try to figure out how to protect it against future collapses, renegade (and charming and singing!) bee expert Dr. Sammy Ramsey enters with a wild idea. He wants to look at the overlooked bee species – the ones of Central Asia– to try to understand how they live in harmony with Varroa Destructor, the parasite that wreaks havoc on American bee colonies. Sammy brings along a tape recorder as he travels deep into the jungle of Bangladesh in search of the overlooked honeybees and is saved by an indigenous bee hunter named Babulal when he finds himself unable to track down the bees. What emerges is an episode of adventure (evading literal tigers and crocodiles), collaboration with an indigenous expert, and sweet, sweet, honey. Sammy and his team emerge with samples that could hold the genetic key to protecting our bees from future collapse.

About Terrestrials: Terrestrials is a show for people of all ages that explores the strangeness that exists right here on Earth. In each episode, host Lulu Miller (co-host of Radiolab) will introduce you to a creature or earthly phenomenon that will defy your expectations of how nature is supposed to work. Along the way, you’ll encounter a chorus of experts, including scientists, surfers, hip hop artists and…a “Songbud” named Alan (indie punk musician Alan Goffinski) who creates original songs for key moments of confusion, discovery or awe. New episodes drop Thursdays. Listen in with your whole family. Or all alone.  Support for Terrestrials is provided by Science Sandbox, a Simons Foundation Initiative, and the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation.
