A family of beekeepers in Grimshaw are one of 13 northern and central Alberta families who have been given the 2019 BMO Farm Family Award. Carrie and Robert Dickson who own and run Mighty Peace Honey with their sons were honoured at the Farmfair Festival in Edmonton over the weekend.

“We were nominated by our local municipality here and it was nice they thought of us. There’s been a lot of other good recipients over the years so we were happy to get it,” says Robert.

He first started beekeeping out of high school and bought the current farm with a business partner in 1988. A few years ago, his partner sold his portion to Robert’s two sons and a true family business was born. Robert says it’s been great to work with his family every day.

“It’s nice to have your kids close to home when they grow up for one thing but it’s even better to have them working on a regular basis with us. We get along good and they’re quite active in the decision making too, it’s just a good combination.”

The family currently has about 4,000 hives and produce nearly 250,000 litres of honey a year. They will get a farm family sign to put on their gate.

This year marks the 50th year for the BMO Farm Family Award.
