CATCH THE BUZZ – Food Issues And The State Of The Union

Food Issues On The Table Tonight In State Of The Union

President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address is expected to cover an array of issues, from immigration to climate change. This year, however, the president is facing an unprecedented number of food issues, and several are expected to come up in tonight’s address. Topics such as child nutrition, trade, pollinator health, and genetically modified organisms are potentially on the plate.

GMO labeling is expected to be one of the year’s most discussed food policy issues. About $100 million has been spent by the private sector to fight state ballot initiatives, but labeling continues to be favored by the public. Vermont is expected to implement its GMO labeling policy in less than 18 months, putting pressure on the Food and Drug Administration to produce national labeling standards.
